The third-generation BMW X5 has been officially announced with increased spaciousness, three engine variants, and even more personalization options.

The 2014 X5 gets a redesign with a more powerful front-end look that further optimizes the Sports Activity Vehicle’s aerodynamics. Its overall design language is further emphasized with Air Curtains, Air Breathers, and Aero Blades for the rear window. The twin-circular headlights now extend into the German automaker’s signature kidney grilles while further individualization can be had through its Design Pure Experience, Design Pure Excellence, and M Sport packages.

The new X5 will launch with three engine variants starting with the X5 xDrive50i which features a new-generation, 4.4-liter V8 engine with 450 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque thanks to a pair of turbochargers. The lower-end model will feature a 3.0-liter, turbocharged six-cylinder powerplant with 258 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque and will be offered as the X5 xDrive30d. Those looking for a balance between performance and fuel economy can opt for the X5 M50d which features a 3.0-liter, six-cylinder diesel engine with three turbos. The M50d cranks out 381 hp and 546 lb-ft of torque. All three powerplants are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Updating the interior, BMW has increased the spaciousness of the X5’s cabin as well as adding more luxury with raised seating position, a low-set instrument panel with horizontal lines extending into the door trim, enhanced interior visibility, and trunk space. The automatic tailgate operation is now standard and can be opened and closed by remote control and from the driver’s seat. Rear comfort seats and additional third-row seating is available as an option.

The infotainment gets up-to-date with a 10.25-inch Control Display for standard-fitted iDrive while the Touch Controller is available with the optional navigation system.

Those looking to further enhance the handling capabilities of the SUV can opt for Comfort, Dynamic, and Professional adaptive suspension packages as well as the Adaptive M suspension.

Pricing on the 2014 BMW X5 is expected to be announced closer to its release date later this year.
