A new Ford Focus ST will be revealed later this year following the debut of its domesticated sibling in New York.

Today, Ford announced that it plans to debut its heavily updated Focus in New York next week, also confirming plans for a “new version” of the Focus ST performance variant. With few further details, the company is leaving room for speculation.

It also announced a sporty new “SE” trim that will include new body cladding, a sportier suspension and 17-inch alloy wheels. Models fitted with an automatic transmission will also come with paddle shifters. Ford is also offering a long list of more premium features in the Focus including a lane-keeping assistance system.

Ford’s announcement about a “new version” of the ST could turn out to be nothing more than a styling update to keep up with its stablemates. Then again, the choice to offer a sportier-looking sedan variant could also be a hint that there will be a sedan version of the Focus ST coming later this year.

Aside from the Mustang, Ford’s performance vehicles are only offered as hatchbacks. By spreading the Focus ST to be a sedan and a hatchback, Ford could reach a broader portion of the entry-level enthusiast market unable to afford a Mustang.

The author is mistaken. The Taurus SHO is a Ford performance vehicle that is not offered as a hatchback. The Taurus is sedan only.
