The all-new Volvo XC90 R-Design

Continuing its attempt to regain relevance and customer attention, Volvo revealed the sportier R-Design variant of its all-new 2015 XC90 crossover today.

Like past R-Design Volvo products, the 2015 XC90 doesn’t get anything that actually enhances its performance capability, although the new Drive-E powetrains offer up to 400 hp by matching a four-cylinder engine that uses both a turbo and supercharger with an electric motor. Given the output of that system, the new XC90 probably won’t want for much power anyway.

The package does include sport seats trimmed in Nubuck and leather, a different gear shift knob, new pedals and trim-specific floor mats to name a few of the interior changes.

Of course, the exterior is also revised with a new grille, a lower spoiler, R-Design trim around the tailpipes and a silver finish for the roof rails and mirror caps. Wheels included on the standard equipment list measure 20 inches although there are also 22-inch versions available.

Volvo didn’t announce pricing for the new R-Design package today, but it said the trim level is part of a new trim level strategy. “Momentum” trimmed cars sit at the base while its “R-Design” and “Inscription” versions share space as range-toppers meant to attract people with different tastes.
