It looks like Ford has a new factory-backed race effort that will be taking the company back to Le Mans.

Rumor has it that Ford will unveil a new GT sports car at the upcoming 2015 Detroit Auto Show, and new reports claim that the car will be entered in the Tudor United SportsCar Championship in 2016 along with the 2016 24 Hours of Le Mans. The two-car racing campaign will come from Ford’s Prototype-class representative in United SportsCar, Chip Ganassi Racing.

The details surrounding the upcoming Ford GT revival are still unknown, including the name of the car. It may not wear the GT badge, and sources close to the project say it won’t have the same retro look as the previous Ford GT, rather opting for a sleek modern design. Power may come from a version of Ford’s twin-turbo V6, though the brand also has numerous V8s in its lineup that could function well in a new top-end model.

At the Detroit Auto Show we will see the road-going car, with the racing announcement coming later on.
