A real, production-based BMW i8 Spyder has been spied testing on public roadways.

It’s the first time a real prototype has been spotted, and is the best proof we have that the BMW i8 Spyder is on schedule to launch by next year. The German automaker has already confirmed the variant is in development, several years after the concept first debuted at the 2012 Beijing Motor Show.

The roadster is expected to arrive along with an updated version of the i8 coupe. Both cars should benefit from a larger, longer-range battery pack and a more powerful electric motor with rumors suggesting they will make around 420 horsepower.

Our spy photographers hope to get better photos of the prototype testing in the near future.
