If there’s a Mecca for speed enthusiasts it’s not found in the Middle East.

Rather, this mythical place is tucked away in an unassuming corner of Western Europe. Huddled amongst Germany’s bucolic Eifel Mountains is der Nürburgring, an automotive holy land that, for decades, has spurred racers and carmakers alike to go faster than ever before.

Nordschleife is the main circuit, a treacherous 13-mile course that’s as demanding as it is deadly. One look at the layout of this track and it’s obvious why people call it the Green Hell.

Conquering this twisting, undulation ribbon of tarmac is a rite of passage for builders of high-performance automobiles. They love nothing more than boasting about how quickly their machines can make it around this circuit, timing their laps down to the thousandth of a second.
