Jaguar 'R' Models Are Likely Getting Axed

Jaguar is having a hard time justifying “R” models in its lineup now that SVR exists.

Speaking to Auto Express, Jaguar SVO design director Wayne Burgess hinted that Jaguar won’t develop R variants of its future models so that SVR can truly shine. The move has already been done with the new F-Pace SVR, which recently debuted at the 2018 New York Auto Show.

“To be completely honest Jaguar is a fairly small brand and probably in reality there is not enough room in each model line to have an R and an SVR,” said Burgess. “We have found F-Type R and F-Type SVR kind of compete against each other. The truth of the matter is that F-Type R is a great car and, in some respects, SVR has a challenging time because the R is such a good car in the first place.”

Without R models, high-performance SVR versions will clearly be the range-topping variant. Along with making it less confusing for shoppers, Jaguar will be able to have a clearer pricing structure for its lineup.

It’s unclear what that exactly means for the existing F-Type R, but it’s a possibility it might be cut from Jaguar’s lineup in the near future.

reading between those lines ..... We have found F-Type R and F-Type SVR kind of compete against each other. The truth of the matter is that F-Type R is a great car and, in some respects, SVR has a challenging time because the R is such a good car in the first place. In other words the R variant is pretty much the same as what you'll get from the SVR ( bearing in mind the little difference in power and performance won't be used by the average buyer ) except that it is a lower price ......... SVR as the pure standalone variant they can charge more ..... How simple is that ? if they just said that people would nod their heads and probably still buy anyway ..... or buy another manufacturers same ilk competitor The boot/trunk space on the F type always makes me scratch my head ... its so poor
