Ward's Auto Announces 10 Best Engines

The annual Ward’s Auto list of 10 best engines gets a pretty decent amount of publicity, in light of how little people pay attention to the publication in the other 364 days of year.

This year’s list includes not one but two electric powertrains, with the Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf making the list, while Volkswagen’s TDI diesel gets a nod for its efficiency and lively (for a diesel) character. Balancing out the eco-friendly mills are high performance engines like Audi‘s 3.0TFSI supercharged V6, BMW‘s 3.0L turbocharged inline 6, the 1.6L four-cylinder turbo used in the MINI Cooper S and a pair of 5.0L V8s from Hyundai and Ford.

Two darkhorse entries rounded out the list, the much lauded 3.6L Pentastar V6 from Chrysler, and Volvo‘s new 3.0L turbocharged Inline 6, an often-overlooked engine that is used for transverse, front-drive applications.

Hands down, the Chevrolet Volt is the most advanced and important powertrain out there. Really makes the Prius look dated in comparison.
