For the first time in 27 years, a rear-wheel drive sports car will act as the designated race car for the 37th annual Pro/Celebrity race at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach on April 20.

Seen here is the actual race-prepared Scion FR-S that will serve as the race car for the drivers of the annual race which raises money for charity supporting children’s hospitals across the US.

“The transformation of the FR-S into a race vehicle is a dream come true for many die-hard FR-S fans, and we wanted to share the journey with consumers at the Chicago Auto Show,” said Doug Murtha, Scion vice president. “Scion vehicles have been driven in the Pro/Celebrity race vehicle since 2005, and we can’t wait to see the rear-wheel drive FR-S race around the historic street course.”

The FR-S sports several upgrades including exhaust, coil-over shocks and springs, a big brake kit, Hawk Performance brake pads, air intake and 18 inch wheels. The vehicle also has some custom components including a Centerforce single disc racing clutch, front MacPherson struts and a rear double wishbone suspension.

“The newly designed Scion FR-S sports coupes are being prepared to debut in time for the 37th anniversary of one of America’s most entertaining motorsports events,” said Les Unger, Toyota national motorsports manager. “Our participants should find it easy to celebrate this year’s race theme – Revved Up to Race – sitting behind the wheel of a race-ready Scion FR-S. The drivers will compete for a chance to earn year long bragging rights and acknowledge charitable donations made on their behalf.”

Since 1991 the Toyota Pro/Celebrity race featured popular celebrities and participants, and has helped raise $2 million dollars for the ‘Racing for Kids’ charity. This year will also feature a a $15,000 donation to the 16th annual People magazine “People Pole Award” in honor of the pole-position winner during qualifying on April 19th.

Scion has also provided a detailed build video of the Pro/Celebrity FR-S which shows how much work goes into the 25-specially prepared race cars.
