Audi believes the new sedan variant of its A3 model will outsell the hatchback and convertible models and will help narrow the gap with BMW in global premium car sales.

The German automaker expects the sedan to lead the way in American and China, markets where traditional four-doors are more popular than in Audi’s home European market. The 2014 Audi A3 sedan will be available in Europe in the third quarter 2013 with a starting price of about $32,150 (25,000 Euros). It will launch in China at the end of this year before heading to America in early in 2014. Later this year, Audi will open a factory in Foshan, China to produce the sedan for the domestic market.

All-in-all, the German automaker has invested more than $1.2 billion to expand the factory and it will be one of the world’s largest engine manufacturing facilities. The project will more than triple the plant’s annual production to 125,000 vehicles.

In addition to the A3 sedan, Audi also plans to launch an S3 model in the U.S., sporting a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine and making 296 hp.
