New details on a successor to the current Mazdaspeed3 are starting to emerge.

According to a recent report, Mazda will give its compact car an overhaul for the 2017 model year that will include new sheet metal in the second half of 2016. The model will also be underpinned by a revamped version of the car’s current SkyActiv platform and will coincide with the return of the high-performance Mazdaspeed3 variant. It is likely that the new Mazdaspeed3 will be powered by a turbocharged 2.5-liter Skyactiv engine, which will make an appearance in the redesigned CX-9 launching the same year.

Rumor has it that the Japanese automaker might give the Mazdaspeed3 all-wheel drive, making it a possible competitor to the Suburu WRX STI and helping fill a void in the sports car market, especially now that the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is being killed. The company hasn’t made an official announcement yet about the car, but a report from Automotive News suggests the powertrain in the new Mazdaspeed3 will make roughly 300 hp.

First of all- I applaud Mazda for what looks like a hot hatch. I always was a WRX STi fan until SOA decided to dump the hatchback. Ok ok- Not everyone likes HB's, but I do. And the rumor that the Speed3 might have AWD and 320hp? Wow- looks like the WRX crowd has competition. Now if Mazda can get rid of the 2" nav screen and put more luxury into the 3's interior like leather seating and heated seats, they will have a hit on their hands. People want more than a fast car-we need a nice interior that we actually enjoy living with daily. And one more thing. Mazda? If you can bring this all in with rumored specs for around $25-30,000? You'll sell every single one you can make. Oh- At least offer more than a couple of exterior/interior color choices. And NO MORE speckled red interiors.
