Hyundai is looking to add a new sports car to its lineup.

In an interview with Autocar, Hyundai’s departing COO Allan Rushforth revealed that the Korean automaker has discussed a new sports car model and is looking forward to bringing one to market. Currently, Hyundai’s sportiest compact car is the Veloster, but the addition of the N performance division open the doors to new opportunities when it comes to sports cars.

Inspiration for the new sports car could come from the PassoCorto concept that debuted earlier this year at the Geneva Motor Show. The PassoCorto concept was designed by the students at IED design school in Turin and sports a 1.6-liter twin-turbo engine with over 260 hp.

The Veloster is weak as hell. Get us a real hot-hatch Hyundai.

The thing is they announced this about a month or so after KIA talked about introducing a compact sports car, so I assume they are already at work on the platform or redeveloping a version of the Genesis coupe's to share. The PassoCorto has a midengine layout so I doubt that'll make production but the basic layout would be ideal as a liftback, with a slightly raised roof for headroom. Hopefully, if it stays in the 161-170 inch length they ditch the idea of rear seats and use the space for added cargo and space for driver/passenger room. The 74in width is perfect for stability. If they do build this thing it'll have plenty of buyers especially since Toyota/Subaru can get away with selling the twins at the price tags they have. Hyundai just has to beat them at making this a performer at high speeds and compliant as a daily driver.
