Jaguar Land Rover‘s Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) division is putting more work into the Range Rover Sport SVR.

According to a recent report, a lighter and even more hardcore version of the Range Rover Sport SVR is in development. Ben Verrecchia, lead vehicle engineer for the Sport SVR program, recently told Australia’s Motoring a faster Range Rover Sport SVR is a possibility thanks to a weight loss program similar to the Jaguar XE SV Project 8. That means stripping the interior of certain appointments such as the rear bench seats, while swapping out other components for lighter versions like carbon ceramic brake discs.

Verrecchia said he’s already begun campaigning for the introduction of carbon ceramic brake discs on the Range Rover Sport SVR and mules are already testing prototype setups. In fact, the team has “plenty of stripped-out Range Rover Sport SVR mules that have only two seats and a roll cage.” The engineer believes those mules could provide the basis for an even faster, lighter SVR in the future.

In another world where the Lamborghini Urus doesn’t exist, we’d ask why SVO would invest into developing such a vehicle. But nowadays, the question really is, why not? Somehow a market for hardcore, high-performance SUVs has developed and there’s little sign of it slowing down.
