Hyundai looks set to address the complaints of those who thought that their Veloster sports coupe was underpowered by showing a turbocharged version at the upcoming New York Auto Show.

The car will use an upgraded version of the Gamma 1.6L direct-injection 4-cylinder producing 208 horsepower, putting it in direct competition with the Volkswagen GTI, MINI Cooper S and other boosted hot hatches. Hyundai is also reportedly aiming to get close to the base Veloster’s 40 mpg rating.

UPDATE: Hyundai has confirmed that this rumor is just speculation and that a Veloster Turbo will not debut in New York. As previously reported, Hyundai will instead unveil the new 2012 Accent.

    Sweet … I think this car is going to be an absolute hit! 40mpg and a turbo will have some very scared looks on the face on Ford and Honda.

    YES PLEASE!!! its really going to be a hard choice between this and the face lifted Genesis coupe with the newer 2.0t gdi motor.

    I plan to order the new Veloster. Mainly I wanted highway mileage at the expense of power, but I would like to know if it will in fact come out with a Turbo as I want to make sure I get it. I was seriously looking at the GTI, as well as Ford Focus hatchback. But I still prefer a 2 door. I am the original owner of my 1991 F250 4×4, so I have one gas hog. Either engine, my mind is set on the Veloster. I hope they will in fact keep me posted if a TURBO will be available as I want to put my order in ASAP.
