Honda’s hold on the mid-sized sedan market – the Accord – made it into this week’s list of the most researched new cars on AutoGuide.com, but only second place.

Instead, the stylish Ford Fusion came in at number one, and why not? The versatile car can come as a gasoline, hybrid or even plug-in hybrid all while offering drivers a fresh look Honda doesn’t compete with.

Kia’s compact Forte came in third, followed by the Chevrolet Sonic sub-compact. The Sonic was Chevrolet’s smallest North American product until this year when the even smaller Spark stole that title.

Finally, the Ford Mustang came in fifth as it quickly approaches its next generation. With big changes on tap, the next Mustang will finally lose its solid rear axle and gain a turbocharged four cylinder engine as an option – sullying the muscle car’s spirit in some minds and refining it in others.
