Volkswagen is combining its past and future with its latest concept, an all-electric van that takes its inspiration from the Microbus.

This is the second vehicle in the I.D. family and will also be based on the Modular Electric Drive Kit (MEB) platform, a new scalable platform that will underpin a number of new electric vehicles from VW. The first I.D. Concept is a small car that VW says can travel about 370 miles on a single charge.

Volkswagen says that the new conept will be able to drive itself “in the future,” without offering a clear timeline. When the driver wants to let the vehicle takeover, they can press the Volkswagen logo, allowing the suite of laser scanners, ultrasonic and radar sensors and cameras take over driving duties. The steering wheel even retracts into the dashboard.

The new concept ties together the “legendary origins of the Volkswagen brand and its electrifying future” by combing the ample space of the bus with an all-electric powertrain.
