In For Testing: 2025 Toyota 4Runner Limited
This week we're back in SUVs—and we mean SUVs.
Welcome back to another week of test cars. This week we're spending time with the 2025 Toyota 4Runner, which was the first new vehicle launch we attended this year. There we got a taste of the myriad flavors Toyota's rugged SUV comes in, from the humble SR5 right up to the fresh, overlanding Trailhunter. The one we have here is the Limited model, which sits right about in the middle of the lineup.
The 4Runner finally saw a new generation this year, the first time in well over a decade. There are a lot of changes, not least of which is the move to a turbo four-cylinder engine. This is Toyota we're talking about though, so of course there is a hybrid option. While that one does get extra grunt, that's not what we have here—this Limited uses the standard engine, good for 278 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. All that goes to a full-time 4WD system via an eight-speed automatic; a full three more gears than last year's model!
The Limited is medium-fancy these days, with a new-for-4Runner Platinum trim slotting in above it now. Nonetheless, this one includes niceties such as ventilated front seats, full leather seating (in pretty Portobello no less), and the adaptive variable suspension (AVS). That should in theory make the 4Runner the smoother ride.
A smoother ride than what? Well it's time for us to do another comparison, and the 4Runner will be facing off against the evergreen Jeep Wrangler. Yes, it should be fun.
