The 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is celebrating the holidays in style.

AutoGuide.com‘s spy photographers have caught the next-generation E-Class cold-weather testing but more importantly, this is the first prototype we’ve seen that is a plug-in hybrid. Seen at the rear bumper is an extra fuel cap for the charger socket that is slightly concealed by the camouflage.

The next E-Class will be based on the same platform as the new C-Class, the German automaker’s modular MRA platform, though it’ll naturally be longer and wider for a more spacious interior. Expect it to also go on a diet thanks to lighter materials that take advantage of the new platform. As is typical with past E-Class product launches, Mercedes will introduce the sedan first before the wagon, coupe and convertible variants arrive.
