Honda is giving its premier hot hatch a handful of changes.

For the 2027 model year, the Civic Type R receives its first major update since the FL5 generation launched, bringing revised exterior bodywork, chassis tweaks, and long-overdue interior comfort upgrades to the U.S. market. While tightening emissions regulations forced Honda to axe the Type R in Europe, American buyers get a refreshed version that is smoother, smarter, and easier to live with every day.

Up front, the 2027 Civic Type R wears a re-profiled front fascia featuring a larger grille opening for improved engine cooling. A deeper, more aggressive front splitter works alongside the revised bumper to increase front-end downforce at high speeds.

Honda’s engineering team also focused heavily on ride quality and driver inputs. The ultra-stiff +R drive mode has been recalibrated to reduce impact harshness and excessive body motion over rough pavement, addressing a long-standing complaint from owners. A new yoke spring added to the brake pedal assembly eliminates mechanical play, giving drivers a firmer, more direct pedal feel under hard deceleration. Additionally, the automatic rev-match system gets updated software for quicker throttle blips, making downshifts through the standard six-speed manual gearbox feel even smoother.

Under the hood, the turbocharged 2.0-liter K20C1 four-cylinder engine carries over unchanged, generating 315 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque sent exclusively to the front wheels via a helical limited-slip differential. The engine bay does, however, gain a new textured engine cover styled to mimic vintage red-top Type R cam covers.

Inside the cabin, the 2027 car resolves a few obvious feature omissions. Three-stage heated front sport seats are now standard equipment, wrapped in a fresh perforated red suede-effect upholstery with black striping. The interior trim shifts to darker tones, featuring black climate control knobs alongside dark gray accents on the shifter, door handles, and center console. Honda also added anti-glare Ultrasuede to the upper door panels and instrument cluster visor to reduce windshield reflections.

On the tech front, the center touchscreen integrates Google Built-in and Amazon Alexa, supported by dual USB-C ports positioned above the wireless charging pad. Standard driver-assist features gain improved lane-keeping assistance and a post-collision braking system.

Exterior paint options expand for 2027 with the addition of Meteorite Gray Metallic. The 2027 Honda Civic Type R starts at $49,990, including a $1,295 destination charge, bringing the hot hatch right up against the $50,000 threshold as inventory arrives at dealerships late this fall.
