Opel‘s new 1.6-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine will be heading to America in 2014 and will be seen under the hood of various Chevrolet models.

GM’s European subsidiary introduced the new powerplant back in May, and is the first of three new lines of four-cylinder engines mostly engineered by Opel. The new turbo-four incorporates direct fuel injection and start/stop technology in order to maximize fuel economy and performance. The powerplant will be able to produce up to 221 lb-ft of torque and production will begin later this year at GM’s Hungary plant.

Chances are, we’ll be seeing the 1.6-liter turbo-four in the Chevrolet Malibu, Equinox, and Sonic models between 2014 and 2015. There are also rumors that the next-generation GMC Terrain will take advantage of the engine.
