The next-generation BMW M3 and M4 models will have optional carbon-fiber backed seats, similar to those found in the BMW M3 CRT model.

The news comes after a prototype M3 was crashed at the Nurburgring and spy photographers were on hand to snap photos of the interior. The BMW M3 CRT (Carbon Racing Technology) shed nearly 150 lbs off the standard weight of the sedan and if the manufacturing is the same as before, the new M3 and M4’s seat backs will feature carbon fiber layers wrapped around a recycled-paper honeycomb.

BMW recently revealed more data on its upcoming new M3 and M4 models, which will make around 430 hp and will weigh around 200 lbs less than before. In addition, the M3 sedan model will gain a carbon fiber roof for its first time and will (despite rumors) continue to be offered with a 6-speed manual transmission as well as a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic.
