2015 Jeep Renegade is the Cutest of Cute Utes

Jeep is continually growing its small SUV portfolio, which started with the Cherokee, and now the brand has rolled out the Renegade at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show.

In total, 16 different powertrain combinations will be available for the Renegade. In the US the Renegade will use a 1.4-liter turbocharged four cylinder as its base engine, making 150 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque. It will be hooked up to a six-speed manual transmission. The larger engine, a 2.4-liter four-cylinder, is mated to the brand’s nine-speed automatic and makes 184 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque.

Four-wheel drive is standard on every model, and customers who want more capability can get the Active Drive Low 4×4 system which includes a 20:1 crawl ratio.

A disconnecting rear-axle is also included, which stays disconnected to save fuel economy, and reconnects to provide proper four-wheel drive.

Jeep wants to be sure that the Renegade is seen as a real off-road vehicle, and will be offering it in Trailhawk trim to prove it. Every Renegade receives auto, snow, sand and mud modes, while the Trailhwak gets one extra exclusive mode for rocks. Front and rear tow hooks, a 0.8-inch lift, underbody skid plates and updated fascias that deliver a 30.5 degree approach, 25.7 degree breakover and 34.3 degree departure angle are all included on the more hardcore version.

Jeep says that the little SUV will wade into water that is 19-inches deep, and will be capable of towing a maximum 3,300 pounds with the small diesel engine offered overseas, or a total of 2,000 pounds with the 2.4-liter gas engine.

Interior design takes many of its cues from other Jeep and Chrysler vehicles, and includes Uconnect infotainment with an optional 7-inch touchscreen in the center stack, a large passenger grab handle, anodized accents, soft touch materials and a removable, reversible and height-adjustable cargo floor panel and fold-forward front-passenger seat.

A new system called MySky will be available to offer the classic Jeep open-air experience. Removable roof panels can be taken off and stowed in the rear cargo area to bring the outside in, while there will also be a power tilt/slide feature for those who don’t want to take them off by hand.

This is the first Chrysler Group vehicle to use the small-wide 4×4 architecture, which will also be used by the upcoming Fiat 500X.

    This Renegade is aimed at the Kia Soul crowd-it isn't a hardcore Jeep product. Fiat was given Crysler Corp. for $1 by Obama and is mining the value out of Crysler until it's dead. No money spent on R&D, just slap something on an existing Fiat underpinning to roll something out the door. Crysler & GM are toast.
