BMW is taking advantage of all the research and development from its i3 and i8.

The latest vehicle in the German automaker to benefit from electrification will be the 2 Series Active Tourer, as AutoGuide.com‘s spy photographers have caught the plug-in hybrid variant of the new hatch testing. Previously, BMW has shown the 2 Series Active Tourer plug-in hybrid in concept form and if the production car will have the same powertrain, it will be a compelling offering in the market.

In concept form, the 2 Series Active Tourer plug-in hybrid sported a 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine powering the front wheels while the electric engine powered the rear wheels only, making it an all-wheel drive car. In the case that BMW does use that powertrain, the three-cylinder engine will have the same 136-hp power output as the standard 2 Series Active Tourer while the electric motors will provide around 60 hp – so expect a total system output of around 200 hp.
