We’ve already covered where BMW, one of Germany’s largest automakers, comes from and where it makes its cars. Now its time to do the same for one of its arch rivals, Mercedes-Benz.

In this post, we’ll provide a brief history of Mercedes-Benz, where the company was first incorporated and where its various assembly plants are located today. Just like our other posts like this, we will only be focusing on the Mercedes-Benz plants that serve the North American market, as it operates many plants that do not serve the US or Canada in any capacity.

Where is Mercedes From?

Mercedes-Benz is a subsidiary of Daimler AG, which is headquartered in Stuttgart, Germany.

The company can trace its origins back to the Benz Patent Motorwagen, which was the world’s first motorized vehicle designed to generate its own power entirely. The man who designed and built it, Karl Benz, is credited with inventing the automobile.

The Benz Patent Motorwagen was invented in 1885, with sales beginning in summer of 1888. The success of the vehicle forced Karl Benz to upscale his once tiny engine manufacturing company, Benz & Cie. By 1899, Benz & Cie was pumping out just under 600 vehicles per year, making it the largest automaker in the world at the time. It also grew from 50 employees in 1889 to around 430 in 1899.

Benz & Cie. eventually faced stiff competition from fellow German automaker Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft (DMG), founded by Gotlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach. The two continued to compete until 1926, when a post-WW1 economic crisis forced them to merge into Daimler-Benz AG. This formed the framework for the companies we know today as Daimler AG as Mercedes-Benz.
