The sports car being collaboratively developed by Caterham and Renault will launch in 2016.

Previously, Renault marketing boss Stephen Norman said the car won’t be any more “hardcore” than a Mazda MX-5. It will, however, mark Alpine’s return and provide a sports car that both Renault and Caterham will be able to sell individually with little or no visual similarity. The same will the true of engine tuning and handling characteristics, both of which will be configured by the companies separately. Pictured above, the Renault Alpine A110-50 concept offers a preview of what to expect from Renault’s version of the car.

Currently, output is said to sit around 250 hp, although AutoCar reports that Caterham wants the car to be closer to 300. That might not come in the first model, but Caterham is reportedly planning to launch more models with different engines after the first product launches.

Caterham calls it car the C120, which will be the first of a planned brand expansion for the British sports car manufacturer. Following the upcoming launch, it also plans to introduce a crossover and a sub-copmact city car in an effort to move more mainstream.
