Seven-time Formula 1 World Champion Michael Schumacher will be brought out of his medically induced coma, his agent has confirmed.

The surprising news comes just days after reports circulated that the retired racing driver, injured in a skiing accident late last year, could remain in a persistent vegetative state for the rest of his life.

According to his agent, Sabine Rehm, “Michael’s sedation is being reduced in order to allow the start of the waking-up process.” Rehm cautioned, however, that such a process, “may take a long time.”

Schumacher’s condition has been listed as stable since January 17 when we has upgraded from critical. Prior to the upgrade he underwent two surgeries to remove blood clots from his brain after suffering a head injury in a skiing accident in the French Alps.
