Demand for the BMW i8 is exceeding the planned initial production volume, the German automaker has announced.

Unfortunately, BMW didn’t disclose how many i8 vehicles are being produced during its ramp-up phase but did also suggest that it has enhanced the car’s efficiency since unveiling it at the Frankfurt Motor Show last fall. The BMW i8 will accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 4.4 seconds and on the EU test cycle, its average fuel consumption was 2.1 liters per 100 km, which equates to 134.5 mpg. Of course those figures will change on the North American test cycle.

The BMW i8 is powered by a hybrid powertrain with 362 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque and deliveries will begin this June. It is also the world’s first production vehicle with optional laser headlights that are 30 percent more efficient than the BMW i8’s standard LED headlights.
