Volkswagen New Midsize Coupe Image Leaked

Images of what looks like the production version of Volkswagen’s New Midsize Coupe Concept leaked roughly a week after its Beijing Auto Show debut.

Assuming the images actually show what will become the production version of that concept, the real-world version will remain almost identical to its concept preview in styling. Volkswagen hasn’t explained its plan for the vehicle, but reports suggest it will be aimed at the growing Chinese market.

The concept uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 217 hp, which Volkswagen says is enough to carry it from 0-62 MPH in 6.5 seconds via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Given Volkswagen’s modular platform strategy, if the NMC proves to be a hit in the Chinese market, there could be room for it to be sold elsewhere. The next version of the Jetta will be based on VW’s front-wheel drive MQB architecture and is expected to arrive in 2016. A version of the NMC for North America probably wouldn’t arrive until after that point if it does at all.
