BMW has approved production for a new crossover that will target the Range Rover Evoque.

The new BMW X2, according to Autocar, will slot in between the X1 and X3 as a coupe-styled small crossover. It will be available in the UK starting in 2017 with no word yet on whether or not it will be sold in North America.

Styling will be similar to that found on the larger BMW X4 and X6, which means you can expect four doors and a raked roofline. The interior layout and switchgear is expected to be shared with the upcoming next-generation X1.

BMW’s UKL 1 front-wheel drive platform, which currently underpins 2-series Active Tourer, will also support the X2. The engine lineup is expected to consist of three- and four-cylinder gasoline and diesel powerplants, while all-wheel drive will be available as an option.

X2 prototypes will begin hitting the road within the next few weeks, while the 2016 Geneva Motor Show will likely play host to the unveil of a BMW X2 concept.

OH MY DOG! not two but three fwd bimmers? Forget 2-Series active tourer; I thought it was embarrassing enough that the X1 was going from rwd to tranverse engine fwd. (transversetite?)
