NHTSA has opened an investigation on older Ford F-150 pickup trucks.

The 2011-2012 Ford F-150 is under investigation after the agency received 32 complaints concerning the model’s electric vacuum assist pump. Owners are alleging that the pump fails, causing the power braking assist to stop working with no warning ahead of time. Two reports of crashes are being linked to the possible issue, although NHTSA lists no injuries connected to those accidents. More alarming, NHTSA reports that the issue could be getting worse, since 60 percent of the complaints came in the past nine months.

Models under investigation are equipped with the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine and the preliminary evaluation has been opened to assess the cause, scope and frequency of the alleged defect. It is also the first step toward a recall that would potentially affect an estimated 250,000 units.
