Toyota has announced an expansion to its Takata airbag recall which affects an additional 1.37 million vehicles.

Based on new information from Takata and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Toyota is now calling back the 2003-2007 Corolla and Corolla Matrix, the 2005-2006 Tundra, the 2005-2007 Sequoia and the 2003-2007 Lexus SC430.

The faulty front-passenger airbag inflator will be replaced in the affected vehicles, as the inflators can explode with too much force, causing shrapnel to shoot at the occupants of the vehicle. These additions take the total number of Toyota and Lexus vehicles covered by Takata recalls in the U.S. to approximately 2,915,000.

The root cause of the issue is still under investigation by a number of parties, including an inquest by Orbital ATK, an independent engineering from that was commissioned by an industry-wide joint committee.

“Toyota’s focus remains on the safety and security of our customers, and we will continue to respond promptly to new developments so we can resolve issues for them as quickly, conveniently and safely as possible,” said Dino Triantafyllos, chief quality officer, Toyota Motor North America.
