Honda S660 Not Coming to US

Honda is on a push to introduce fun cars into its lineup, but the S660 Convertible isn’t part of the plan for the U.S. market.

“I wouldn’t put my chips on that,” John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda told Automotive News when asked about whether or not the small two-seater would come to the U.S.

Reports were claiming that Honda was considering the car for the U.S., but the company believes its too small, sitting almost a full two feet shorter than the Mazda MX-5. “When the practicalities of the market come in, and the car only so big, that might not be the best car for the U.S. market,” Mendel said. “It might be better for India or China or somewhere else.”

The introduction of the Civic Type R to the North American market proves that Honda is committed to adding fun to its American lineup, and the automaker probably won’t stop there. Recently, design patents were filed for a small mid-engine sports car, that appears to be a downsized version of the NSX. That same car was exhibited as a design study at Honda’s R&D lab in Silicon Valley, though Honda hasn’t confirmed any plans to bring it to production.

Honda dealers are also pushing to get the car into their showrooms. “They want anything in the sports car world,” Mendel said. “They’re going, ‘Gimme a sports car.’ They want a retractable hard top; they want a high-horsepower $20,000 sports car. Because that’s the nature of what they do.”
