Audi will reportedly debut a hydrogen concept at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show.

The new concept will be based on the e-tron quattro concept (seen above) that debuted at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show but will be hydrogen powered and is tentatively called the h-tron quattro. Although official details on its specifications aren’t yet available, Auto Bild reports the drivetrain will be entirely new and is made up of a fuel cell to convert hydrogen to electricity, a battery pack, lightweight tanks to store hydrogen and an electric motor mounted over each axle.

Like the e-tron quattro concept, it will have all-wheel drive and might be capable of driving short distances on electric power alone.

In light of the recent diesel scandal from the Volkswagen Group, it’s no surprise the automakers under its umbrella will focus on alternative powertrains. Volkswagen is already expected to show off a new electric vehicle concept at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) and now it appears Audi will follow it up with a hydrogen fuel-cell concept. The e-tron quattro concept is expected to become Audi’s first production electric crossover in 2018, so it will be interesting to see if the German automaker also spawns a hydrogen variant.
