The top three finalists for the 2016 World Car of the Year awards have been announced.

Three vehicles have the chance to be named the overall 2016 World Car of the Year: the Audi A4, Mazda MX-5 Miata and Mercedes-Benz GLC. The winners will be announced at the 2016 New York Auto Show on March 24.

There are five different categories in which vehicles are competing for top honors, with this latest announcement whittling down all the categories to three top finalists.

Up for 2016 World Luxury Car of the Year are the Audi Q7, BMW 7 Series and Volvo XC90, while the 2016 Performance Car of the Year battle will be between the Audi R8, Honda Civic Type R and the Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe.

Competing in the Green Car of the Year category are the Chevy Volt, Toyota Mirai and Toyota Prius, while the World Car Design of the Year will go to either the Jaguar XE, Mazda CX-3 or Mazda MX-5.

In 2015, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class walked away with the title of World Car of the Year, while the S-Class won the luxury category, the Mercedes-AMG GT took the performance award, the BMW i8 won for the green car award and the Citroen C4 Cactus won for design.

Automotive journalists from all over the world are part of the committee to vote on and choose the World Car of the Year.
