Once complete in 2027, the network will have over 400 hubs across North America.

Mercedes-Benz on Thursday announced ambitious plans to build a dedicated charging network. At CES 2023, the German automaker detailed the planned roll-out, starting with North America this year, which should result in over 400 locations and 2,500 chargers by 2027.

Mercedes says it has “carefully selected” charging locations, based on common travel routes, urban centers, and the proximity to food and restrooms. Each location will feature at least four charges, stretching to 12 at larger spots. Eventually, Mercedes foresees certain locations including as many as 30 chargers. These high-power locations will include fast-chargers up to 350 kW—currently higher than any Mercedes’ max charging rate, though that is sure to change by 2027.

On top of that, Mercedes will be equipping all locations with surveillance cameras for added security—an aspect often overlooked with modern charging stations. Where necessary, charging points will include roofs for protection from the elements. Where they do appear, these roofs will feature solar panels to supply electricity for the lighting and surveillance equipment.

Crucially, this won’t be a Merc-only affair. Mercedes has confirmed the network will be open to all brands. That being said, Mercedes-Benz owners will “enjoy special benefits,” like the ability to reserve a spot ahead of arrival.

The project will be done in collaboration with existing MB partner Chargepoint, which handles the brand’s existing Mercedes me Charge program. Also part of the project is MN8 Energy, a solar energy and battery storage provider originally formed by Goldman Sachs Asset Management.

In addition to the big news of a charging network, Mercedes also revealed other important updates at CES 2023. These include automated lane changes for the North American market, and the first conditional availability of Level 3 automated driving in North America. For the latter, Mercedes has applied for certification in California and Nevada; if approved, the Drive Pilot can take over driving duties up to 37 mph (60 km/h).
