Despite previous plans for a 2013 launch, development of the Audi R8 e-Tron just ground to a halt.

The Audi R8 e-Tron holds the record for the fastest all-electric production based vehicle to ever lap the Nurburgring, putting up a time of 8:09.099 back in June of this year. Now, a video has been released showing the electric super car making its record setting run at the hands of former DTM racer, Markus Winkelhock.

Audi’s E-Tron electric R8 has been given the green light and should be on the road in two to three years. Audi of America President Johan de Nysschen has said that a car based on the E-Tron concept, which debuted at the Frankfurt Auto Show last month, will be built. He expects fully functional examples to be ready in two years, but a production version may take slightly longer.

Audi has been teasing the world with rumors of an electric car debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show, but executives have gone so far as to flatly deny the existence of an electric R8.

After vehemently denying rumors that the company is working on an electric version of the R8 sports car, Audi is stirring up interest by launching a new website called Electricity Untamed. There isn’t much on the site, expect for a drawing of a sports car that could be an R8, or a TT, or even, well, any Audi.
