More Than Just a Mild Refresh

Hyundai has officially shown the North American version of the 2024 Sonata. Although we saw glimpses of it overseas earlier in the year, this marks the official debut of the vehicle we will be receiving.

New Look

The most notable change to the Sonata is easily the exterior sheet metal. Up front there is a full-length horizon lamp perched atop a set of somewhat hidden headlights. There’s a new grille and larger air intakes to give the car a more aggressive appearance.

In the back, there are new H-shaped tali lights that Hyundai claims emphasizes the Sonata’s wide stance. The car features a black spoiler-like feature that’s built right into the trunk lid. Depending on version, the exhaust is either hidden or on full, multi-tip display.

Upgrades Inside

The 2024 Sonata’s interior is stated to have a ‘floating’ theme that is enhanced by ambient lighting. Like a lot of recent Hyundai products, there’s an available panoramic curved display that houses a pair of 12.3-inch screens: one for driver information and one for the infotainment system.

The Sonata can finally be equipped with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a feature that has been sorely lacking. Other available features include a 12-speaker Bose audio system with new CenterPoint 360 technology and a Digital Key.

Similar Power, New Driveline

The new Sonata will be available in three basic forms. There are models powered by a 2.5-liter gasoline engine, a sporty N Line version with a turbocharged four-cylinder, and a full-hybrid model.

The three remaining powertrains are essentially carried over from the 2023 model year, but there is a significant change under the Sonata’s skin. For the first time, the sedan can now be had with optional all-wheel drive. Mated to the 2.5-liter naturally aspirated engine, the Sonata uses Hyundai’s HTRAC all-wheel drive system that utilizes an electro-hydraulic system.

Sonata N-Line

For those wanting a bit more performance, there’s still the Hyundai Sonata N Line. Besides the potent 2.5-liter turbocharged engine, the N-Line has its own exterior look. Most notable are a larger front grille, exclusive 19-inch wheels, rear spoiler, and dual twin-tip exhaust.

Inside, there’s red-accent stitching, and a cool cross-metal patterned trim. Of course, the N-Line is available with launch control, N powershift, and rev matching automated shifting. For those that really want to stand out, there’s a new N-Line-exclusive Ultimate Red Metallic exterior colour.

Ride and Safety

Hyundai claims the new Sonata has further improved in terms of noise, vibration, and harshness. The main upgrades to achieve this are enhanced body reinforcements and a change of steering wheel material.

On the safety front, the 2024 Hyundai Sonata comes with everything one would expect in a modern sedan. Highlights include forward collision-avoidance, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot collision assist (BCA), lane keeping assist (LKA), smart cruise control, and more.

Pricing and other details will be announced closer to the on-sale date.
