Yes, the Viper is back and with its debut SRT boss Ralph Gilles announced another surprise: it’s returning not just to the street, but also to the race track.

The Viper GTS-R, backed by a factory SRT team, will compete in this year’s American Le Mans Series (ALMS), taking on Corvettes and Ferraris.

“Racing has been a significant part of the illustrious history of Viper not only with wins on the track, but also in the continued development of the street cars – and our new 2013 SRT Viper models are proof of those lessons learned,” said Gilles.

The Viper already has a strong following of core enthusiasts but the Chrysler corporation is obviously trying to expand it further, with the win on Sunday, sell on Monday mentality.

Until it hits the track, check out out extensive gallery of photos from the New York Auto Show below.
