The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is commencing an investigation into an estimated 123,000 Hyundai Elantra’s after a metal bracket used on the driver’s side-curtain airbag cut a gash into the ear of a driver.

There has only been one reported case of this problem to date, and so far there is nothing to suggest that this accident was anything more than an isolated incident. Even so, the investigation will look at model year 2012 Hyundai Elantra’s to ensure that this incident will not be duplicated in other models under similar conditions.

The injured driver said specifically that the bracket, “Sliced my ear in half,” and that it “could have been [my] neck.”

The investigation began on May 10, 2012.
