A single vehicle incident report has spurred NHTSA to open an investigation looking into steering loss in 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe vehicles.

The issue is a fastener in the lower steering column which can come loose, and cause steering shaft separation. If this happens, the driver will lose all steering control. At the time of separation, the vehicle that experienced the incident had been in use for 22 months and 33,000 miles.

A Preliminary Evaluation has now been opened by NHTSA to assess the scope of the situation, and to evaluate whether further action will be needed.
