The next generation Volvo XC90 is due for some radical changes, but we won’t be seeing them until the SUV debuts later than expected, in late 2014.

Volvo has been preoccupied lately designing a new family of four-cylinder engines, appointing a new CEO, and preparing its new scalable platform architecture, a setup which will also carry the next generation S60, V70, XC60 and S80. The XC90 will be the first vehicle to utilize that new scalable platform, and one of the new four-cylinder engines.

When the new XC90 arrives, expect it to have a more upscale interior, style taken from the Volvo You Concept, and the utilization of direct injection, turbocharging and an available hybrid setup.

Early design sketches reveal some of the new styling coming to the XC90, but for a full reveal, we still have a while to wait.
