After debuting concept versions of the next-generation Golf and GTI at the Paris Motor Show last year, Volkswagen is now teasing a Golf R model ahead of a likely debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

The German automaker has already given us a preview of its Golf R Cabriolet model, which will be the fastest open-top Golf model ever. Powered by a 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder, the Golf R is expected to sport 290 hp, which is 20 hp more than its predecessor.

The Golf R will be all-wheel drive and the engine will be mated to a seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission that will let the hatch sprint to 60 mph in just 5.3 seconds. The 2014 Golf R will sport a base price of around $51,000 (€38,000) when it goes on sale in Germany.
