BMW is currently working on adding an X4 model to its crossover/SUV lineup, stating that the X4 will bring new customers to the brand when it launches next year.

Similar to how the X6 is a coupe-styled alternative to the X5 SUV, the X4 will take on the role of a coupe-styled alternative to the current, smaller X3 model. The X4 will essentially be a sportier version of the X3, with a lower roofline and hopes of targeting a new demographic for the German automaker.

BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer confirmed that the X4 will launch next year and will be built at the automaker’s plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina. BMW is currently boosting the annual capacity of the plant from 300,000 to 350,000 a year.

Last year, global sales of the X3 increased 27 percent to 149,853 making it BMW’s best-selling SUV. The X5 was third with 108,544 units sold, while the X1 was in the middle with 147,776 sold.
