After a full season of racing in Europe, the McLaren 12C GT3 race car has now been approved to race in the Pirelli World Challenge series, that runs here in North America.

For 2013, the McLaren race car has received some tweaks, the biggest being a new hood and ducting that will allow the car to operate at higher temperatures. The car uses a 3.8-liter V8 twin-turbo engine mated to a six-speed sequential motorsport transmission.

In 2012, the McLaren 12C GT3 put up 19 victories and a further 19 podium finishes, and now it is looking to expand its winning heritage to American race leagues.

“The 12C GT3 enjoyed plenty of success throughout the last year, proving itself to be a true contender and claiming victories in a number of different championships across the world,” said McLaren Group CEO Martin Whitmarsh.

“It will be a true testament to the enduring power of Bruce McLaren’s legacy to see the McLaren brand make a return to racing in North America on a regular basis throughout 2013, the year in which we’re celebrating the marque’s 50th anniversary,” he finished.
