BMW aims to put its next-generation 7 Series on a huge diet, and its flagship sedan could weigh less than the current 5 Series when it debuts.

The new 7 Series will lose its steel monocoque construction found in this generation’s model for a structure made of steel, aluminum, and carbon fiber. The base model for the next-geneneration 7 Series will weigh significantly less than the current 4,190 pounds and might even weigh less than the current 5 Series’ 3,680 pounds.

The weight reduction won’t sacrifice size or interior space however, as our recent spy photos reveal that the next-generation 7 Series will carry similar dimensions. The 2016 BMW 7 Series is expected to make its official debut at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show.
