Mercedes-Benz to Build a BMW X6 Rival

Mercedes-Benz is expanding its portfolio with plans to take on the BMW X6 with a new crossover based on the M-Class.

Two unnamed executives confirmed the plan to Car & Driver, saying that there is a business case for such a vehicle.

Essentially it will be an ML with a more rounded rear end and more aggressive styling. Mechanically, the new crossover is expected to carry over everything from the ML, including a turbocharged V6 and V8 along with a diesel option and a high-power AMG version.

Seeing as the platform and powertrains already exist, it will be relatively cheap for Mercedes to go after the X6, an important factor considering the market for niche luxury vehicles such as these is so small.
