Imagine being trapped in a burning building several stories above ground and escaping by climbing onto a ladder only to have the extended apparatus collapse on itself.

According to documents released by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Administration, a flaw with certain ladders mounded on fire trucks, the risk exists. A new recall campaign affecting 156 trucks has been initiated because “bearings used for the extension of the ladder may seize causing the extension cables passing over them to chafe and fail.”

Affected ladders were fitted to trucks ranging from the 2000 to 2012 model years and Sutphen Corporation – the ladder supplier – says it has notified owners. NHTSA documents show the company has already inspected affected vehicles and repaired them if necessary.
