Some may have been underwhelmed by the refreshed Volkswagen Jetta that was recently unveiled at the 2014 New York Auto Show, but the next product overhaul will take things much further.

The Volkswagen Passat will be refreshed for the 2016 model year, and newly appointed Volkswagen of America president and CEO Michael Horn told Motor Trend that the new car will be a “big step” compared to today’s sedan.

Sales of the Passat surged in 2012, but have since taken a nose dive. In an effort to combat this, Volkswagen plans on redesigning the exterior of the car to rid it of its bland looks. “The Jetta [refresh] now is a decent step…it’s nice, makes it more sporty, makes it more dynamic. But it’s on the lower end of what we can do. But the Passat [refresh] is very strong. We go much further.”

On top of looks, new technologies will also be fitted in the Passat, and the inclusion of a plug-in hybrid powertrain is nearly certain.
