Diesel Mazdas to Use Aftertreatment After All

Mazda might have to give in and turn to an aftertreatments in order to market its diesel powertrain in North America after all.

The Japanese automaker’s diesel offering has been expected to be available for quite some time now, but numerous delays have caused speculation and rumors on whether the company will utilize exhaust aftertreatment in order to meet emissions regulations. Most recently, a report from The Truth About Cars noted that Mazda has decided to use aftertreatment of an unspecified type.

According to Car and Driver, the Japanese automaker still has no official announcement on the diesel engine’s availability or the use of an exhaust aftertreatment. The company however is committed to the diesel program but “no official arrive date has been established.” For now, we’ll have to continuing waiting until Mazda achieves the performance, efficiency and emissions standards it wants before seeing Skyactiv-D equipped models.
