The Mazda Miata and MX-5 have a long, impressive history when it comes to motorsports and the Japanese automaker is looking to continue that tradition with the next generation MX-5.

The new 2016 Cup Car was unveiled during the SEMA show in Las Vegas, showcasing the future of the Cup car series. Though little specifics were detailed about the car, we do know that the Cup car events will take place across the world starting in 2016. At the end of the series, a Global shootout will take place at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in California in order to crown the world champion. The winner of that race will get a chance to audition for a spot in Mazda’s TUDOR SKYACTIV prototype race car.

2014 SEMA Show Coverage

We know that the car will feature a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. Safety equipment has been added including a roll cage, racing seat and a racing harness. The interior has been gutted out, a racing wheel added and some aero tweaks are present. But that is all we know as to what modifications may have been made to the MX-5. Production of the race car will begin this winter.
